CHAPTER NINETEEN

CRYSTAL

The plane Jesse sent for me was a six-seater. Simply having his own plane said something about the man I was going to meet, as did having a private pilot and attendant. The plane was decorated in a masculine style with seats that faced a table with easily accessible outlets. No television or bar. The pilot who met me on the tarmac was polite but formal. The attendant was friendly enough, but outside of periodically asking me if there was anything I needed, she stayed out of the way. It was an airborne workspace, and the tone of the flight reflected that.

Not sure what to expect from our date, I’d packed a small bag of options. The slacks and shirt I wore could be dressed up or down. I was wearing the high heels Ellie had told me complemented my outfit, but I also brought sneakers in case Jesse suggested a long stroll. The weather in New England could be unpredictable, and anywhere near the ocean was always cooler, so I brought a jacket. The wind near the water could be brutal for hair, which was why I’d also packed a hairbrush. Although the flight was a short one, I’d brought my laptop so I could get some work done. If so much of the food I loved hadn’t had garlic in it, I wouldn’t have brought my toothbrush. A bathing suit made sense in case he chose to take me to a beach. I didn’t have the kind of body that allowed me to simply grab something off a rack and feel good about it.

Last minute, I’d also thrown a handful of condoms in a small bag with some makeup. It was better to be prepared than not.

It wasn’t until we’d landed and the pilot said he’d have my luggage brought to the car that it struck me that I might have brought too much.

Luggage.

I brought luggage to our first date.

I was still recovering from that realization when the attendant told me Mr. Rehoboth was outside waiting for me. I wanted to grab her by the shoulders, shake her, and say, I’ve changed my mind. I can’t go on the date. I brought luggage.

Instead I set my chin at a proud angle and followed the attendant out the door of the plane to the top of the stairs. Jesse was down below, leaning against a car. Dressed in simple dark-gray pants and a deep-blue button-down shirt, he pushed off the car as soon as he spotted me.

I made my way down the stairs, taking calming breaths the whole way. The man who met me at the bottom of the stairs was polished and powerful. Confident. Dangerous.

So sexy I swayed toward him without saying one damn word. Rehoboth. His last name was familiar but not enough to matter to me then.

He cupped my chin with one hand and gave me a kiss I knew I’d remember for the rest of my life. It was a welcome, a promise, and a dare all in one.
